Panel Discussion: Branding Beyond Borders:Elevating India on the Global Garment Manufacturing Stage
Moderator: Mr. Prashant Agarwal, Co-founder & Joint Managing Director, Wazir Advisors
Panelists
Speaker 1: Mr. Pallab Banerjee, Managing Director, Pearl Global Industries Ltd
Speaker 2: Mr. Arth Patel, Chief Business Officer, OfBusiness
Speaker 3: Mr. Anil Peshawari, Managing Director, Meenu Creation LLP
The first panel discussion was moderated by Mr. Prashant Agarwal which highlighted that as emerging markets rise and established ones innovate it is imperative for India to strengthen its global presence and elevate its brand in the garment manufacturing sector. India must leverage its diverse competencies to build a strong “Brand India” on the world stage. Mr. Agarwal pointed out the regional expertise within India’s textile and apparel industry: The Tirupur cluster in South India is renowned for its knitwear production, while North India excels in value-added garments. He also highlighted an unique aspect of India’s economic trajectory-unlike countries like China and Central American nations, which experienced significant manufacturing phases, India moved from an agrarian economy directly into a service-based one, bypassing a substantial manufacturing phase. This has resulted in the manufacturing sector contributing just 17% to India’s GDP in 2023, although the government aims to increase this share to 25% by 2025. For developing nations, such a production phase is crucial; Mr. Agarwal drew a comparison to China, where, during its development in 2013, the manufacturing sector accounted for 44.2% of its GDP. By fostering its manufacturing sector, India has the potential to become a major player in global garment manufacturing.
Mr. Pallab Banerjee underscored the critical need for enhancing manufacturing excellence and significantly scaling up production in order to meet the rapidly growing global demand for garments. He pointed out that, in a highly competitive global market, Indian companies must focus on improving their production capabilities and operational efficiency to better serve international buyers. By delivering consistently high-quality products at scale, Indian manufacturers can position themselves as the preferred sourcing partners for global fashion brands. Mr. Banerjee highlighted that this would not only increase India’s market share but also solidify its reputation as a reliable and efficient hub for garment manufacturing, capable of meeting the expectations of the world’s leading retailers.
Mr. Arth Patel underscored the critical need to increase management bandwidth within organizations to enhance India’s position in the global garment industry. He explained their organizational practice of hiring graduates from top business schools and placing them directly on the shop floor, facilitating a hands- on learning experience that equips future leaders with practical knowledge while fostering cross-industry collaboration. By immersing young talent in the manufacturing environment, organizations can infuse fresh perspectives and innovative ideas, essential for adaptability and responsiveness to market demands. Developing a new generation of leaders who understand both business strategy and manufacturing intricacies will enable India to leverage its unique strengths, build a competitive edge, and enhance its brand equity in the international garment market.
Mr. Anil Peshawari highlighted the significant challenges investors face when attempting to establish large-scale manufacturing capacities in India, particularly in remote areas. He pointed out that labor availability is a major concern, as workers in these regions are often unskilled and not fit for work. Peshawari emphasized the need to set up factories in locations where labor is more abundant and capable. He discussed how infrastructure limitations, regulatory hurdles, and supply chain complexities can further hinder growth in the sector. Additionally, he addressed the latency of state subsidies in taking effect, suggesting that the state governments should impose these subsidies while the central authorities monitor their impact. This approach could help create a more conducive environment for manufacturing growth, ultimately benefiting the industry as a whole.
In conclusion, Mr. Prashant Agarwal emphasized that, in light of the discussions on enhancing manufacturing excellence and addressing challenges in the garment industry, developing a cluster-based expansion approach is vital. He pointed to the success of Sri Lanka as a model for India, suggesting that focusing on specific regions with unique competencies could significantly elevate India’s global standing. Furthermore, he cautioned that while government-based incentives may provide temporary relief, they should not be the cornerstone of business planning due to their inherent latency. This highlights the necessity for sustainable, long-term strategies that leverage India’s strengths and foster resilience in the textile and apparel sector, ensuring its competitiveness on the global stage.

Mr. Birnbaum highlighted the current importance of Indian players in the apparel manufacturing landscape and stressed upon the need for strategic adjustments to align with global trends to capitalize on emerging opportunities and sustain long term success.
Following Mr. Birnbaum’s insightful presentation, the first half of the session concluded, followed by a lunch break that provided further opportunities for exchange of ideas.

From the moment she took the stage, she captivated the audience with her dynamic and insightful approach, diving into the crucial role that incentive models play in enhancing performance within factories. Panelists
Panelist 1: Mr. Anupam Jaiswal, Vice President-Strategy and Market Development, WFX
Panelist 2: Mr. Manish Ranade, Managing Director, Lectra Technologies India
Panelist 3: Mr. Surender Jain, Business Director, Wazir Advisors
Panelist 4: Mr. Vivek Baghora, Operations Head, Fashion and Lifestyle Business Unit, OfBusiness
In the highly competitive garment manufacturing industry, cost management is crucial for sustaining profitability and ensuring market competitiveness. However, cutting costs cannot be at the expense of quality or ethical standards.
The second panel discussion, moderated by Mr. Varun Vaid, Business Director, Wazir Advisors, focused on how garment manufacturers can utilize modern tools and technologies to streamline operations, reduce expenses, without compromising quality, ensuring long-term success and customer satisfaction.
Mr. Anupam Jaiswal spoke about the transformative impact of digital tools on modern garment manufacturing. He elaborated on how real-time monitoring systems and data-driven technologies can streamline operations, enhance visibility, and significantly reduce costs. By leveraging these digital tools, manufacturers can optimize production workflows, quickly identify inefficiencies, and respond to issues in real time, leading to improved operational performance. Mr. Jaiswal emphasized that digital tools are only as effective as the people who use them, stressing the importance of integrating technology into daily operations. He underscored that when skilled workers are adequately trained to use these tools, the combined effect can drastically increase overall productivity, efficiency, and cost- effectiveness, giving manufacturers a critical competitive edge in the global market.
Mr. Manish Ranade further expanded on the conversation by diving into the role of structured operational approaches, particularly Industrial Engineering (IE) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), in driving performance improvements. He discussed how implementing digital tools, in combination with robust IE frameworks, can optimize every stage of the manufacturing process, ensuring streamlined workflows without compromising on quality. Mr. Ranade provided examples of both national and international companies that have successfully adopted these methods, showcasing how such approaches enable manufacturers to achieve long-term sustainable competence. He stressed that by integrating digital tools with these structured processes, manufacturers can achieve consistency, maintain high-quality standards, and drive efficiency at scale, all while keeping operational costs in check.
Mr. Surender Jain then shifted the focus to the manpower, highlighting the vital role that workforce retention and development play in maintaining operational excellence. In line with Ms. Amandeep Randhawa’s previous presentation, he explained that a motivated and well-trained workforce is the backbone of any successful garment manufacturing operation. Without proper training and a clear path for professional development, companies are likely to face high turnover rates, which can lead to frequent disruptions in production and inflate long-term costs. Mr. Jain emphasized that investing in employee development, whether through upskilling or continuous training programs, is essential to ensuring that workers remain engaged, motivated, and capable of contributing to the organization’s goals. By retaining skilled workers, manufacturers can maintain consistency in both output and quality, helping them meet production targets while keeping costs under control.
Mr. Vivek Baghora addressed the strategic importance of workforce monitoring and the critical need for ongoing training programs. He underscored that, beyond implementing digital tools, manufacturers must also focus on building a culture of continuous learning and improvement. By providing workers with regular training on new systems and techniques,
companies can ensure that their workforce is not only equipped to handle the demands of a high- performance environment but is also adaptable to technological advancements. He emphasized that effective workforce management-whether through training, performance monitoring, or structured development programs-plays a significant role in enhancing overall productivity and maintaining operational excellence, ensuring that companies can stay competitive in an increasingly complex and fast- paced global market.
